Alveolar Bone
The alveolar bone is the portion of the jaw that surrounds and supports the tooth sockets (alveoli), forming the bony ridge where teeth are anchored. It comprises a thin outer cortical plate and an inner spongy (trabecular) bone and remodels continuously in response to chewing forces, tooth movement, and overall oral health.
Clinically, the condition of the alveolar bone is important for tooth stability, periodontal health, and planning dental treatments such as extractions and implants. Loss of alveolar bone can occur after tooth loss, infection, or periodontal disease, and may be managed or mitigated with procedures like bone grafting, socket preservation, or ridge augmentation to restore form and function.
