Bridge (Dental)

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth by spanning the gap with artificial teeth called pontics that are supported by neighbouring teeth (abutments) or by dental implants. Common types include traditional fixed bridges that use crowns on adjacent teeth for support, cantilever and Maryland bridges with alternative support methods, and implant-supported bridges that attach to implants for greater stability.

Treatment usually involves preparing the supporting teeth or placing implants, taking impressions, and fitting a custom-made bridge in subsequent visits, sometimes using a temporary restoration while the final bridge is made. With good oral hygiene and regular dental care a bridge can last many years, but patients should consider risks such as decay of abutment teeth or gum disease and discuss whether an implant-supported solution may be a better long-term option.
