Buccal
Buccal describes the surface or direction of a tooth that faces the cheek. It can refer to the buccal surface of both anterior and posterior teeth as well as to the buccal mucosa (the inner lining of the cheek) and is one of the standard anatomic terms dentists use to locate areas within the mouth.
Clinically, buccal is important for examination, restorations and oral hygiene because many fillings, crowns, veneers and cleanings involve the buccal surfaces of teeth; it also guides the positioning of X-rays, orthodontic brackets and injections. Understanding buccal in relation to opposing terms such as lingual or palatal helps patients and clinicians describe symptoms, plan treatment and monitor oral health.
