CAD/CAM
CAD/CAM stands for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing and refers to the digital technology used in dentistry to scan teeth, design restorations on specialist software, and manufacture them using milling machines or 3D printers from materials such as ceramic, composite or zirconia. The process typically involves a digital impression or intraoral scan, virtual design of the restoration, and onsite or laboratory production, allowing for a highly controlled fit and consistent shaping.
For patients, CAD/CAM can mean faster turnaround and fewer visits because some restorations can be completed in a single appointment, and the digital workflow often improves precision and reproducibility compared with traditional techniques; however, not every case is suitable for a fully digital approach and clinical judgment about material choice and preparation remains important.
