Eruption (Tooth)
Eruption (Tooth) describes the natural movement of a tooth from its formation site within the jaw into its functional position in the mouth, typically breaking through the gum tissue. This coordinated process involves root growth, changes in the surrounding bone and soft tissues, and follows a predictable sequence for primary (baby) and permanent teeth, though timing can vary between individuals.
Variations in eruption include accelerated or delayed emergence, eruption cysts and impaction when a tooth cannot fully emerge due to lack of space or obstruction. Management depends on the cause and may range from observation and orthodontic guidance to surgical exposure or extraction, and in cases where a tooth is missing or nonviable, prosthetic options such as bridges or implants may be considered.
