Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatment is a preventive dental procedure in which a concentrated fluoride agent is applied to the teeth to strengthen enamel and help stop or reverse early stages of tooth decay. These treatments are commonly delivered as varnishes, gels, foams or rinses and work by promoting remineralisation of weakened enamel and increasing resistance to acid produced by bacteria.
Fluoride treatment is often recommended for children, people with a high risk of decay, those with dry mouth, or patients wearing orthodontic appliances; frequency ranges from every few months to annually depending on individual risk. When used as directed by a dental professional or in age-appropriate home products, fluoride is safe and effective, but excessive ingestion in young children can lead to dental fluorosis, so dosing and professional guidance are important.
