Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy
Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy is a conservative approach to treat gum disease (periodontal disease) without surgical intervention. It typically involves thorough cleaning of the tooth surfaces and roots — commonly called scaling and root planing — to remove plaque and hardened calculus, along with use of ultrasonic instruments and personalised oral hygiene instruction to lower bacterial levels and inflammation.
Depending on disease severity, clinicians may add local antimicrobials, systemic antibiotics, or more frequent maintenance visits as adjuncts to mechanical cleaning, but the central aim remains mechanical removal of infection. The goals are to reduce pocket depths, preserve supporting bone and teeth where possible, and establish a regular home care and recall routine to maintain periodontal health long term.
