Acrylic Resin
Acrylic resin is a synthetic polymer commonly used in dental appliances, most often as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Dentists and technicians use it for denture bases, temporary crowns and bridges, orthodontic appliances, custom trays and relines because it is lightweight, easily shaped, and can be coloured to match natural teeth.
There are heat-cured and self-cured formulations: heat-cured acrylic tends to be stronger and to release fewer residual monomers. Acrylic resin offers good aesthetics and easy repairability, but it is less wear-resistant and more prone to fracture than ceramics or metal-based materials, and some patients may have sensitivity to the monomer; proper fabrication, thorough curing and regular maintenance help reduce these risks and extend service life.
