Dentin
Dentin is the layer of hard tissue that makes up the bulk of a tooth beneath the outer enamel and around the central pulp chamber. It is less mineralised than enamel, contains microscopic tubules that transmit sensations to the nerve, and provides structural support to both the crown and the root.
When dentin becomes exposed through wear, decay, or gum recession it can lead to sensitivity to temperature and sweets and allows cavities to progress toward the pulp; dentists treat exposed or damaged dentin with restorative techniques such as fillings, bonding, crowns or in some cases root canal treatment if the pulp is affected. Sealing dentin tubules and restoring lost tooth structure are common goals to reduce symptoms and protect the tooth from further damage.
