Implant Abutment
An implant abutment is the component that links a dental implant (the titanium post placed in the jawbone) to the visible restorative piece, such as a crown, bridge or denture. Abutments may be prefabricated or custom-made and are commonly made from titanium, titanium alloy or ceramic; they attach to the implant either by a screw or by cementing and help transfer chewing forces from the restoration to the implant.
Placement of the abutment usually follows successful osseointegration of the implant and involves taking an impression or digital scan to ensure the restoration fits accurately. Good oral hygiene and regular dental reviews reduce risks such as a loose abutment screw or peri-implant inflammation, and the abutment can be replaced or adjusted if aesthetic or functional changes are needed.
