Jawbone

The jawbone includes the maxilla (upper jaw) and the mandible (lower jaw) and forms the bony framework that supports the teeth, anchors facial muscles and helps determine facial shape. It contains the alveolar processes that hold tooth sockets, houses nerves and blood vessels, and provides leverage for chewing and speaking.

Loss of jawbone volume can occur from tooth loss, periodontal disease, trauma or age-related bone resorption, which can affect appearance, oral function and the ability to place dental implants. When bone is insufficient, procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lifting can rebuild the jawbone to restore function and provide a stable foundation for treatments like dental implants or full-arch implant restorations.
