Lip Repositioning

Lip Repositioning is a surgical technique used to reduce a gummy smile by altering the attachment or movement of the upper lip so that less gum tissue shows when a person smiles. It is most appropriate when the excessive gingival display is caused by a hyperactive upper lip or a short vestibular mucosa rather than by excessive tooth height or jaw positioning.

The procedure usually involves removing a small strip of mucosa from the maxillary vestibule and suturing the lip in a lower position under local anaesthesia, with generally short recovery time and mild swelling or discomfort for a few days. As with any procedure, there are potential risks such as scarring, temporary altered sensation, or variable long-term stability, and alternatives such as botulinum toxin injections, crown lengthening, orthodontic treatment or orthognathic surgery may be considered based on the underlying cause.
