Oral Prophylaxis
Oral prophylaxis is a routine professional dental cleaning performed by a dentist or dental hygienist to remove plaque, calculus (tartar) and surface stains from the teeth. The procedure commonly includes scaling with manual or ultrasonic instruments, polishing to smooth the enamel, and often flossing or application of topical fluoride; its purpose is to reduce bacterial buildup and support healthy gums and teeth.
Regular oral prophylaxis helps prevent gingivitis and can reduce the risk of progression to periodontal disease, improve breath and contribute to overall oral comfort, and it also prepares the mouth for restorative or cosmetic treatments. It is not a substitute for deeper periodontal therapy when infection or bone loss is present, so patients should combine professional cleanings with daily brushing and interdental cleaning and follow their dental professional’s recommended recall schedule.
