Osseointegration
Osseointegration is the process by which living bone fuses directly to the surface of an implant, forming a strong and lasting structural connection. This biological bonding usually develops over several weeks to months after implant placement and is essential for the implant to provide stable support for a crown, bridge or denture.
Successful osseointegration depends on factors such as bone quality and quantity, the implant surface and surgical technique, and the patient’s overall health and habits; smoking, certain medical conditions and infection can impair healing. Clinicians monitor the integration process, advise on care and temporary loading restrictions, and manage any complications such as peri-implantitis to help ensure long-term stability.
