Prosthesis (Dental)
A dental prosthesis is a medical device made to replace one or more missing teeth and the surrounding supporting tissues. Common types include removable options such as complete or partial dentures and fixed solutions such as bridges or implant-supported prostheses; materials often used include acrylic, metal alloys and ceramics, and the main goals are to restore biting function, speech and facial appearance.
Provision of a prosthesis usually involves clinical assessment, impressions or digital scans, try-in appointments and adjustments to achieve comfort and a natural look; some prostheses are temporary while others are intended for long-term use and may be retained by crowns, abutments or implants. Ongoing care involves daily cleaning, periodic dental reviews and occasional relining or replacement as oral tissues and wear change over time.
