Root Planing
Root Planing is a non-surgical periodontal treatment that targets the surfaces of tooth roots beneath the gumline to remove plaque, bacterial toxins and hardened calculus (tartar). By smoothing the root surfaces, the procedure helps reduce pocket depths, encourages gum reattachment and lowers the bacterial load that drives periodontitis.
The treatment is commonly performed alongside scaling and may be carried out over one or more visits depending on the extent of disease; dental instruments or ultrasonic devices are used to debride and polish root surfaces, often under local anaesthesia. Aftercare focuses on excellent oral hygiene, possible temporary sensitivity as roots become exposed, and follow-up appointments to monitor healing and prevent recurrence.
