Tartar

Tartar is a hard, calcified deposit that forms when dental plaque mineralises on the surfaces of teeth and around the gumline. It is composed of bacteria, food particles and minerals from saliva, typically appearing as a yellowish or brownish layer; once tartar has formed it cannot be removed by regular brushing or flossing alone.

Tartar buildup increases the risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease, can cause bad breath and may lead to recession or damage to tooth-supporting structures if not managed. The only effective way to remove tartar is through professional dental cleaning (scaling and polishing), and prevention focuses on good daily oral hygiene, regular dental check-ups and reducing dietary sugars.
