Zirconia
Zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is a ceramic material widely used in dental restorations such as crowns, bridges and implant abutments. It is valued for its high fracture resistance, tooth-like colour and biocompatibility, and can be manufactured as a solid (monolithic) restoration or layered with porcelain for enhanced translucency.
Clinically, zirconia offers strong, long-lasting restorations with low thermal conductivity and good resistance to wear, and it is suitable for patients with metal sensitivities. Dentists will consider factors such as the restoration location, bite forces and aesthetic needs when choosing zirconia; older veneered zirconia can be prone to chipping, while modern fully contoured and properly polished zirconia tends to perform very well.
